The Class 20 is a type of diesel-electric locomotive otherwise known as English Electric Type 1. Produced between 1957 and 1968, 228 of these came out of the factories in northern England. Featuring relatively basic technology, these diesels were built to run mixed freight traffic and had did not have train heating facilities. Unusually, they incorporated a single cab design which made for visibility difficulties in service. In the James Bond film "Goldeneye", a Class 20 was ominously modified to play the role of an escape train.
