Built to replace many locomotive-hauled passenger trains, they are the latest in the "Sprinter" series, manufacturing taking place between 1989 and 1992 by the British Rail Engineering Limited at its Derby Litchurch Lane Works. Unlike its predecessors, this class of Sprinter was the first to feature air-conditioning, an on-board payphone, power operated interior doors, provision for a refreshment trolley service and a toilet in each carriage.
This locomotive is DCC ready and has an 21 pin socket, a chip for which is available from here. Fitting a chip is required for DCC operation.
