Introduced in 1885 the ‘W4’ was used across a variety of industries including collieries and steelworks. Its small wheelbase made it ideal for shunting purposes and the design received many revisions once in traffic through respective owners. Examples of the ‘W4’ were operated by the National Coal Board as well as the London Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) and Great Western Railway (GWR).

Hornby’s new model of the ‘W4’ 0-4-0ST follows in the footsteps of the Sentinel 4wDH shunter introduced in 2014 in having a small four-wheel chassis. The Peckett will be DCC Ready using a 4-pin socket arrangement and the tooling will feature both plastic and die-cast construction to ensure the model has adequate weight for haulage.
